Non-fiction cinema is a type of cinematography that is traditionally opposed to fiction or fiction. This type of cinematography has some important features.
Instructions
Step 1
In the Russian language, the differences between the concepts of fiction and non-fiction films are very blurred. It is much more logical to use the English terms "fiction" and "non-fiction" (translated as "with fiction" and "without fiction"). You can describe non-fiction films as filming real people in real real-world situations. Non-fiction films are not documentaries in the general sense of the word, since documentaries may contain staging elements, dramatizations filmed specifically for the film. But when describing this type of art, these concepts are often combined.
Step 2
The themes for non-fiction or documentary films are most often cultural phenomena, outstanding achievements, scientific hypotheses, interesting events, descriptions of the life of famous people or groups of people. But historical reconstructions in feature films, even if they fully correspond to reality, cannot be called representatives of non-fiction films. And films in which there are elements of production, for example, a special provocation of heroes to emotions or the restoration of documentary events on the screen, on the contrary, are considered representatives of the genre.
Step 3
There are several types of non-fiction films that are not mutually exclusive and do not exhaust all possible options, since in this type of cinema there are no clear boundaries between genres. It can be an event chronicle, filming for special purposes (for example, for police protocol, video surveillance, scientific filming), film chronicles, author's journalism, etc. According to its form, non-fiction films can be divided into a film reportage, a portrait film, a film diary, a film journey, a film essay, a film research, a comedy film, etc.
Step 4
The tasks facing the creator of a non-fiction film can be different: creation of a textbook; geographical, ethnographic, zoological, historical or any other research; creation of a means of propaganda (scientific, religious, selling, etc.); creation of newsreels (description of a long process or historical events), creation of a journalistic work (consideration of current political and social problems). The documentary filmmaker Hugh Bedley has well defined the main task of the entire genre of non-fiction films: "to tell about the world in which we live."
Step 5
The process of making a non-fiction film is quite complex. Previously, the author needs to find materials that should be vital and documented. Based on the proven facts, a script is written. To combine all the materials into one film, archival photo and video materials are edited, reportage (in the form of interviews or newsreels) and staged (but accurately recreating the picture of what is happening in reality) shooting, interior or field shooting are carried out, depending on the scenario.
Step 6
So far, non-fiction films are not popular with viewers, although many films and documentaries are being created. It's just that not all of them reach the mass audience. Most often, such masterpieces can be seen only at special or even closed film festivals, which so far also cannot boast of a large audience.
