One of the most common bicycle breakdowns is the figure eight - the geometric deformation of the wheel, which can be caused by too strong loads on the wheel while driving.

Step 1

Sooner or later, any cyclist is faced with wheel deformations - even if he drives a little and carefully, the load on the wheel leads to the fact that one day its geometric shape is violated. A couple of times a year at the beginning of each cycling season, check the wheels to make sure they are in the correct shape, and correct if necessary.

Step 2

A rim that has no geometric defects should be perfectly round as well as perfectly flat. Look at the rim from the side - if some part of it does not coincide with the plane of rotation and deviates from it, this means that an eight has appeared on the wheel, and it must be eliminated.

Step 3

Any cyclist who has enough patience and perseverance for painstaking work can straighten the wheel. Prepare a spoke wrench and a piece of chalk. You will use chalk to mark the defective spots on the wheel.

Step 4

The wheel can be removed from the bike and installed on a special machine if there is one, but if the damage to the wheel shape is minor, the wheel can be straightened without removing it from the fork. Flip the bike with the wheels up to control its position in relation to the fork and brake pads.

Step 5

Determine where the defect is - spin the wheel and bring the chalk closer to the rim without touching it. The wheel, turning, will touch the chalk in the place of the defect, and you will determine where the wheel was deformed, and in which direction it is deflected. Use the spoke wrench to start adjusting the wheel - tighten the spokes on one side of the rim and loosen them on the other side to avoid an egg-shaped wheel deformation.

Step 6

If the figure eight is small, and the defect occurs between adjacent knitting needles, tighten the first knitting needle slightly, and loosen the second by the same number of turns. If the defect is opposite the spoke, tighten it by 1/4 turn, and loosen the adjacent spokes by 1/8 of a turn.

Step 7

In the case when the figure eight touches several adjacent knitting needles, tighten the knitting needles that are closer to the center of the deformation, and loosen the outer needles slightly. Spin the wheel and check with chalk if it is straightened. If the wheel is not straightened, continue adjusting and twisting the spokes.
