With the release of The New Centurions (1972), Atherton got a chance to develop further. Once he was noticed by Spielberg and decided to try the lead role of the fugitive Clovis Michael Poplin in the movie "The Sugarland Express" (1974). After the release of the film, William woke up a famous person.
