It is necessary

  • - a sheet of rice paper;
  • - ink;
  • - thick and thin brush;
  • - suzuri or ceramic saucer.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare everything you need for drawing. Pick up a piece of rice paper. It can be hand-made, it is preferable to paint on it, since paper absorbs water in a special way. Paints and mascara spread very well over it, creating the necessary color transitions. Rice paper rolls are also available. It is factory-made, has a smoother surface and gets very wet from paint, so it is recommended to put ordinary watercolor paper under the sheet.

Step 2

For drawing, at least 2 brushes with rounded edges are required: a thin one for drawing details and a thick one for drawing basic lines. The bristles of the brushes can be from goat, boar or marten, while synthetic products are not suitable for drawing sumi-e. Soften the new brushes. Dip them smoothly several times in a saucer of water. Rinse brushes thoroughly after use and dry only in a horizontal position. They can be used for painting again only after they are completely dry.

Step 3

Traditionally, ink is ground in suzuri, a specially treated stone in the shape of a circle or rectangle. Rub a block of mascara on the surface of the stone with water droplets. Fill the well on one of the sides of the suzuri with water. On sale, even in specialized art salons, suzuri is very rare; instead, you can use a ceramic saucer that is not varnished.

Step 4

Sumi-e ink for painting comes in the form of rectangular blocks, which are made from powdered pine coal and a sticky substance. Rubbed mascara on the surface of suzuri is mixed with water and paint is obtained. For drawing on rice paper, you can also use liquid ink, which is sold in bottles, or ordinary watercolor paint. When mascara or black paint is mixed with different amounts of water, different shades are obtained from light gray to deep black.

Step 5

When everything is ready, start the exercises. Dip the brush into clean water so that it gets completely wet. Then dip it vertically in medium tone paint. And then the tip is in dark ink.

Step 6

Place the brush on the rice paper and draw an oblique line with the same pressure on the brush, you should get a line with different shades. Then try to draw lines with stops, with arm breaks, with pressure on the brush. To increase the width of the line, press harder on the brush as you move. To lighten the line, lift the brush so that the bristles just touch the paper. Draw the main lines of your painting and then paint in some details with a thin brush.
