Step 1
First, determine the layout and composition of the future portrait. Try to sketch with thin lines. This is done with a hard pencil. Draw the silhouette of a person, apply the main features of the face to the drawing, background elements, items of clothing.
Step 2
Now think carefully about the color base of your portrait. Select its main task. It should be emphasized by all colors. In addition, all shades must be in harmony with each other. A portrait can evoke calm emotions if you use lighter and pastel colors when creating it. The picture will become more dramatic and sensual, and will make a greater impression on the viewer if you use bright and contrasting colors. Choose the color of the picture depending on what tasks you set for yourself, as well as on who you are drawing.
Step 3
Depict the lightest parts of the portrait first. Try to more accurately and more successfully convey face plastic with paints. Oil is a rather difficult material to draw. Therefore, to better understand how to reflect the transitions between colors, try to practice a little on a draft sheet first. Then you can easily use different shades of oil paints and best reflect the plasticity and emotional saturation of the portrait. Before you start painting, mix the paints on the palette to the desired shade.
Step 4
Don't forget to reflect shadows and highlights in your portrait. Apply the paint with a brush in short, light strokes. You should gradually apply each layer of strokes to the painting.
