Until 1849, top hats were mostly used by men. These are tall hats with narrow brims and a flat top. However, in 1849, the British developed a tight-fitting tight hat with small brims to protect the heads of the rangers from low hanging branches, cold, and wind. Step 1

Step 5
Sew the edges of the fields with a silk ribbon. To stiffen the margins, place a wire cage under the tape.
Trim the base of the hat head with tape or braid, attach a bow or buckle.
