Tiny woolen socks aren't just cute on your toddler. These practical items of clothing reliably protect the feet of babies from the cold, whose thermoregulation is impaired in the first months of life. But such a necessary product can be knitted independently. Beautiful and additionally decorated gizmos will serve as an excellent gift for a crumb.

Step 1
Choose the yarn carefully for knitting a newborn. Although wool socks will be worn over cotton diapers, infant skin is so sensitive that even through a layer of linen, rough and prickly garments can cause discomfort. Choose threads from the special children's series: hypoallergenic, especially soft and gentle to the touch. Merino wool, alpaca, mixed with acrylic are perfect. As for the color of the socks, pediatricians recommend a calm pastel palette for newborns.
Step 2
Before you start knitting socks for a newborn, make a sample of knitted fabric on the knitting needles on which you are going to work. Tie a 1x1 elastic (knit 1, purl 1). It is enough to make a 10x10 square or 10 straight and reverse rows of 10 dialed loops with this pattern. Wash, dry the resulting fabric and use it to calculate the required number of loops for the upper - elastic - part of the sock.
Step 3
Fold a pair of knitting needles together and cast on the desired number of stitches in multiples of four. Pull one spoke carefully. To make woolen socks fit a newborn baby, even without preliminary calculation, you can dial 32 loops on thin stocking needles, and this will be enough.
Step 4
To knit socks for a newborn, distribute 8 loops on four knitting needles (hereinafter, calculations for 32 initial loops). Then fasten the first row. To do this, take a free - fifth - knitting needle and close the knitting in a circle by knitting the first thread bow from the beginning of the set. Tighten the loop well so that the first circular row looks neat, without a long yarn pull!
Step 5
You can work on the beginning of the sock with various elastic bands, but the usual alternation of the front and back loops of 1x1 looks the most attractive. To make the socks with a hem, it is recommended to make the elastic a little higher, namely about 8-10 cm. After the end of the elastic top of the sock, perform 4-5 rows of hosiery.
Step 6
To start knitting the heel, divide the set number of loops into two parts, leave one of which on the needles. Continue to knit the second on two knitting needles with front stitch for about 8-10 rows (depending on the thickness of the working yarn). Then divide this number of loops into 3 parts, that is, if there were 16 loops in total, you get two side parts of 5 loops and the middle part - 6 loops. Continue to knit the center part (6 loops), with each row alternately knitting the loops that remained on the side parts. Thus, the heel of the toe will be tied.
Step 7
Go back to the first part, namely 16 loops, knit them, then cast 5 loops on the side, continue knitting the middle part of the heel (6 loops) and then cast 5 loops from the heel again. Thus, the product will again consist of 32 loops.
Step 8
Continue to knit the arch of the foot, about 5 cm long, and then begin to sequentially reduce the number of loops. To decrease the fabric, knit 2 loops together on each knitting needle at the beginning of the row, which ultimately will give a sock of an elongated pointed shape. Tighten the last loop and use a crochet hook to sew on the wrong side.
Step 9
Try knitting a spiral sock for a newborn. You get a cropped stocking without a heel - a dimensionless piece of clothing that can be worn for quite a long time, despite the rapid growth of the baby's foot. For such a sock, make a 5x5 elastic band (5 front and 5 purl loops) of the required height, then attach a thread of a contrasting color to the last knitted loop (as an option - a special knitting marker, a pin).
Step 10
Begin knitting a sock in a spiral. Make a 5x5 elastic, but every 4 circles, move the knit to the left by one loop. For convenience, in order not to lose the border of the next offset, constantly tie the contrasting thread (rearrange the marker, pin) to the corresponding loop.
Step 11
Make a tubular fabric that resembles a twisted spiral with an elastic band on the stocking needles. When the sock reaches the desired length (elastic plus the length of the foot to the base of the toes), switch to hosiery. Form the toe of the wool sock. To do this, on odd rows (that is, on the needles No. 1 and 3), knit each first pair of thread bows together. On even rows (on needles No. 2 and 4), decrease the loops in the following sequence:
- do not knit the second loop in the row;
- remove it on the working knitting needle;
- knit the first loop of the row;
- Pull the removed loop through the knitted one, that is, the second through the first.
Step 12
Tighten the top of the spiral sock and pull the remaining thread to the wrong side. Make the second product according to the finished sample. Moisten ready-made woolen socks, twist in a spiral shape and let dry on a clothesline.
Step 13
You can decorate your socks with twisted cords with tassels, pompoms. It is also permissible to crochet the "cords" yourself, for which it is enough to dial a chain of air loops of the required length. Another option is to tie on two straight knitting needles. Type on the loops: the typesetting edge will be equal to the length of the cord. Knit knit, while loosely close the row. When closing the loops, do not pull the tie so that it does not twist in a spiral manner, from time to time stretch and straighten the lace. Make the second product according to the finished sample.
Step 14
For the pom-pom, cut out two cardboard circles. Draw an inner circle in each and make a neat cut along the marked line. Fold the blanks and wrap tightly with yarn, passing the threads through the cut out centers of the circles. Cut the yarn along the top hem, remove the cardboard templates, and tug the yarn around the middle of the pompom. Make the second accessory according to the pattern.
