There are a huge variety of decorative stitches that can be used to decorate the edge of the product and embroidery. All of them are made on the basis of simple stitches.
Contoured seams
These are the simplest types of stitches, by combining which you can create a unique pattern. Contour seams include stitches "forward needle", chain stitches, stem stitches, and so on. Each of these seams has several varieties.
A needle-forward stitch is a series of small stitches and skips of the same size. By itself, it is not decorative, but if you combine several elements, you get very nice seams that can be used to decorate the product.
On the basis of the “forward needle” seam, a “lace” stitch is made. To do this, lay a line of stitches "forward to the needle" with threads of the same shade, while the distance between them should be 2 times less than the size of the stitches themselves. Then wrap the thread around them in a contrasting color. Alternatively, you can use two shades of thread and wrap them around the needle-forward stitch.
When making a stalk seam, the needle should move from left to right. To do this, bring the thread to the right side, insert it through a short distance, making an oblique stitch. Then bring it back to the right side of the fabric, but in the middle of the previous stitch, and insert the needle into the fabric half a stitch below.
The chain stitch looks very beautiful in the embroidery. It is performed from top to bottom. Bring the thread to the right side of the fabric and pierce it in the same place, while a small loop should form.
After that, bring the needle out after a couple of millimeters so that it is inside the loop and tighten it slightly. Continue sewing in the same way. Do not tighten the stitches and try to make them the same size.
Cruciform decorative seams
All varieties of this type of seams are made on the basis of "goat" stitches. To do them, bring the needle to the right side of the fabric, sew a diagonal stitch (from right to left). After stepping back a couple of millimeters, bring the needle back to the front side to the right of the first one and insert the needle diagonally down to the left side. Continue to sew the seam in the same way for the required amount.
The "goat" seam is beautiful in itself. They can fill the background of the embroidery if the stitches are placed close to each other. But it can be diversified using threads of a contrasting shade.
If you embroider with vertical stitches at the tops of the seam crosses, you get a seam called "tied goat". A very beautiful decorative stitch based on these stitches is an "intertwined goat". Sew the goat stitch. After that, wrap it with a thread of a contrasting color. Bring the needle out to the right side at the beginning of the seam on the right. Pass the thread under the first diagonal stitch, then guide it under the second diagonal. This will create a loop over the top and bottom seam crosses.
