Grace Slick (Grace Barnett Wing) is an American rock singer and songwriter with The Great Society and Jefferson Airplane. Short biography and family

The future rock star was born on October 30, 1939 in Evanston, Illinois (USA). Her parents were Ivan Wing and Virginia Barnett. Grace has a younger brother named Chris Wing. He was born in 1948. Since the singer's father often changed jobs, as a child she managed to live in the suburbs of Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Palo Alto. It was in Palo Alto that she received her secondary education. At first she went to a regular school, but then her parents poisoned Grace to a private school for girls.

Career and creativity

The singer's musical career began in 1965 in the city of San Francisco. Then she, together with her husband, under the impression of the Beatles, decides to create her own musical group. It was also influential when Slick saw the already formed Jefferson Airplane perform. She realized that by doing music, she could earn more money and this occupation is much more pleasant for her than working in the modeling business. Thus, the group "The Great Society" was created. In it, Grace was a lyricist, vocalist, and also played guitar and piano. Over the course of the year, the group became quite popular and gained a lot of fans in the city.

In the fall of 1966, the singer Signy Toli Anderson left the Jefferson Airplane for family reasons and Slick was invited to replace her. Grace decided to join them as she considered this group more professional than her own.

After Jefferson Airplane disbanded, the singer and other former band members decided to form Jefferson Starship. But Slick became a problem for the team in many ways. So in 1978, during a tour of Europe, due to her alcoholism, the group was forced to cancel their first performance in Germany.

During the 1980s, Grace remained the only Jefferson Airplane member of the Jefferson Starship. Although the band was a success, Slick was unhappy with the new rendition. In 1989, she and her colleagues reassembled the old Jefferson Airplane.

Personal life

The first husband of the rock singer was cinematographer Gerald Jerry Speke. They were married from 1961 to 1971. After the divorce, Grace decided to keep his last name. She then married Jefferson Starship lighting master Skip Johnson. Their couple existed from 1976 to 1994.

The singer has a daughter, China. Born on January 25, 1971. Chyna's father is former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Paul Kantner (died January 28, 2016). Slick had a relationship with him from 1969 to 1975.
