Creating a relief pattern on polymer clay

The embossed pattern gives the product made of polymer clay an original and unusual appearance. Various vignettes, unusual lines and curls look very beautiful. With further processing, they can be effectively colored. This pattern is perfect for creating buttons, beads and other details.

The easiest way to apply a pattern to polymer clay is to use additional elements with a pronounced relief. Buttons, seals, badges, dried leaves, tree bark, etc. are suitable for the case. For example, to create a bead with a pattern, roll a small ball-base. Pass a toothpick through it. Roll out two polymer clay cakes. Make an imprint on each prepared element. Gently wrap the bead, being careful not to disturb the pattern. If the texture and order of the picture is not necessary to preserve, you can make prints directly on the created "ball".

Craftswomen apply a pattern to polymer clay using small / large details. Thus, it is easy to make an imitation of "porous" or aged material. Suitable for drawing a pattern: coarse salt, rice / buckwheat, beads / bugles. Just "roll" the workpiece, slightly pressing the particles into the material.

A pattern on polymer clay can also be applied with a toothpick, needle or any sharp object. In this case, you will have to manually process every millimeter of the part. The advantage of this method: you can apply any drawing or stylized ornament that will retain its shape after baking.

Drawing on polymer clay

A product made of polymer clay can be made very unusual and noticeable if you apply a beautiful, professional drawing to it. For this purpose, magazine clippings or just a printed image are great. The latter is best done on a laser printer: this way the quality will be several times higher. You will also need formic alcohol / vodka and a cotton swab to work.

Place the printed / cut-out picture with the front side on the created blank. Soak a cotton ball well with rubbing alcohol and blot the paper. Make sure the entire surface of the image is wet. Wait two to three minutes.

When the paper dries up a bit, start peeling it off gently. The desired image will remain entirely on the surface of the polymer clay. Trim the edges as needed. You can fix the drawing with a special varnish.

Thus, you can easily apply absolutely any pattern to polymer clay. But please note: it will be located on the surface in a mirror image. If you want to decorate an accessory with an inscription, it should be printed, having been reflected in a graphic editor in advance.
