Fern is one of the most famous plants. Its features associated with the reproduction of spores and the absence of the usual flowers, as well as with a dislike for the sun's rays, gave rise to many legends. Some growers even warn against breeding ferns in their own apartments.
Like every houseplant, the fern has its own fans. The main reason for this adoration is obvious: ferns are the basis for creating a charming green corner, practically independent of sunlight. Rooms with windows facing north or shaded by tree crowns are beautifully decorated with the greenery of a variety of ferns.
The positive effect of ferns on the microclimate at home
The decorativeness of domestic fern varieties is beyond competition. The maidenhair, whose delicate foliage is similar to girlish curls, is also called "Venus of the Hair". Green and shiny fronds (this is how the “leaves” of the plant are called) of the asplenium, or “deer tongue”. The exquisitely charming cytomium, also called holly, or sacred fern. Fluffy twigs of davallia, or "hare's paw", grow nephrolepis lashes up to 3 meters, woodward looks like a bunch of green ostrich feathers. The appearance of the pellei, pteris and especially the platycerium, or "deer horn", is peculiar.
The name of one of the most beautiful ferns, maidenhair, translates as “not moisturizing”: drops of water roll off it, and the plant remains dry even after spraying.
It is believed that the fern brings an atmosphere of peace and tranquility to the house. This fact becomes especially noticeable when the owners love the plant, carefully caring for it. Legends tell about the exceptional luck of the owners of non-existent fern flowers, but other parts of the plant, according to myths, bring success and even serve as a talisman.
The main enemies of indoor ferns are drafts, cold, dry air, direct sunlight or excessive light. However, severe shading and dampness can also lead to the death of certain species.
Cons of breeding ferns at home
The temperature and humidity required for the fern to thrive are best expressed by the "warm and damp" formula. This microclimate is not good for all households. In addition, among the various allergic reactions, there is also an allergy to plant spores. Mythology, along with positive statements, also contains information about the negative, connecting the appearance of a plant with failures, the interest of evil spirits in it, etc.
There is an opinion, however, unverified, that ferns have the ability to take energy. It is recommended to place them closer to the TV as an "antidote". Other, already verified, information indicates the ability of the plant to absorb oxygen at night and emit a lot of carbon dioxide. Not knowing about this feature, you can wake up with a headache after a night spent in the company of adiantums, nephrolepis and other ferns.
