When paintings are stored without creating a special microclimate, over time, their appearance begins to deteriorate. The varnish cracks, the paint layer comes off, the canvas itself decomposes. In some cases, you can save the image at home.

- - emulsion for dissolving varnish;

- - scalpel;

Instructions
Step 1
Remove the painting from the wall and free it from the frame. Examine the canvas for damage. The older the work of art, the higher the risk that the oil in the primer will break down the fibers of the fabric. If there are a lot of damaged areas, it is necessary to duplicate the canvas. Cut a piece from the new canvas to the size of the old one and glue it to the wrong side of the image using sturgeon glue. If only the edges of the canvas are damaged, use small strips of new canvas.
Step 2
Take sturgeon glue and honey in equal proportions. Stir the mixture well and heat in a water bath. With a wide brush, apply the warm mass to the front of the painting. Cover everything immediately with tissue paper and iron with a warm iron (do not heat to maximum). This is how the layers are strengthened. Dampen a cotton swab with warm water and gently peel off excess glue and tissue paper.
Step 3
Stretch the painting onto a working stretcher, the slats of which are 20-30 cm longer than the sides of the canvas. To do this, cut four wide strips from craft paper and attach them with one side to the planks and the other to the canvas to stretch the picture.
Step 4
Soak a cotton swab in a mild emulsion to dissolve varnish. Swipe it over the image, removing dirt. Work in complete silence to catch the moment of removing the varnish to the border with the paint. As soon as the tampon reaches her, the rustling sound will change to a more resonant one. Very thick layers of varnish can be gently scraped off with a scalpel.
Step 5
Examine the painting cleaned of varnish. In places where the soil has moved away from the canvas, apply a new one to the damaged area. Having chosen the desired shade of paint, paint over the heavily cracked areas, without touching entire areas. Dry the painting and re-varnish. Slide into frame and hang.
