Drawing is a craft. Here, as in any business, a good result comes with experience at the cost of long training sessions. Portrait is a very complex genre, where it is important not only to draw technically correctly, but also as closely as possible to nature. One of the main elements of the portrait is the lips. Here are some tips to help you learn how to draw lips with a pencil.

Step 1
Beginning artists can be encouraged to practice with photographs from magazines. For convenience, divide the selected pattern into squares by drawing a grid on it. Draw the same mesh on the drawing sheet. A closed mouth is easier to draw than an open one. In this case (due to the abundance of small details), a finer mesh will do. Do not try to draw from memory, try to depict what you see in front of you. That is why it is important, until the eye is trained and not accustomed to the rules of construction, to use a grid. It allows you to maintain the proportions of the picture and learn how to build the correct form.
Step 2
When drawing from nature, study the object, examine the lips carefully from above and below, from the side, from the front and from the front. This will help you see the individual characteristics of specific lips, better understand and remember the shape for its correct image. Start drawing with light lines that are easy to erase. Measure the ratio of the height to length of the mouth, draw a midline and center, if the drawing is from the front, the center will be offset.
Step 3
With a narrowed eye, look at the object, so you can see the darkest area, and shade it. Use small, frequent, non-destructive strokes. Usually, a person's upper lip is darker than the lower lip, since less light gets on it, and the darkest place is on the sides of the mouth at the border of the upper and lower lips.
Step 4
Shade the next tonal section along with the previous one, so you will maintain the tone ratio. Bright or muted highlights are visible on the lower lip, mark them in the picture right away. If they are thin, passing over the relief, it is easier to make them at the end of the work with the help of a "sharp" eraser, making a light stroke on the shaded surface. The corners of the mouth do not end with a line, but with a droplet of hollow. It is very important to portray them - so the mouth will look going inward, and not flat lying on the surface of the face.
Step 5
The shadows around the mouth are part of any mouth pattern, but in the masculine version they will be more striking.
The finished mouth is outlined only in cartoons and never in a portrait drawing.
