Unfortunately, everyday dresses are less and less common in the wardrobe of modern women. The dress, the quintessence of femininity, disappears from everyday life and becomes an outfit for a special occasion. Elegant dresses are worn on a first date, a gala appearance, a corporate party or a trip to a restaurant. This means that for sewing a dress, more and more often they choose not simple chintz or half-woolen fabric, but something spectacular and very elegant.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, decide on the choice of style. The more complex the cut of the selected model, the softer and thinner the selected fabric should be. If the dress provides for a large number of gathers, draperies or flounces, chiffon, acetate or natural silk, thin taffeta and crepe will be ideal choices.
Step 2
If there is a need to hide excess fat at the waist and at the same time emphasize the figure, dense taffeta will be the best choice for sewing a dress. It holds its shape perfectly and drapes well with rigid folds.
Step 3
A dress made of natural silk will adorn your wardrobe. Silk is called the king of fabrics for a reason. It is lightweight, breathable and very durable. A dress made of natural silk can have any complex structure, the seams and folds will be flawless. But keep in mind that, like all natural fibers, silk wrinkles very easily. Therefore, in such a dress, you should not come to an event where you have to get up and sit down often: the skirt will very quickly take on a “chewed” look.
Step 4
Natural silk and satin have a very slippery surface, consider this when choosing a model. Otherwise, you will have to constantly adjust the slipping straps or hangers.
Step 5
If your figure is not perfect, do not choose fabrics with a shiny surface for the dress, this visually adds volume. Satin, silk, moire taffeta, satin are more suitable for slender girls.
Step 6
Do not choose acetate satin for dresses with a fitted bodice. It stretches very quickly and loses its shape, especially at the seams. In general, a satin dress should look as if the seamstress's hand did not touch it. It is the ideal fabric for loose, flowing designs with light draperies.
Step 7
Fabric with a complex structure, embroidery, sequins is suitable for very simple models. In addition, such fabrics are not suitable for public events, because few people will be able to appreciate the sophistication of a design or decoration up close. If you plan to appear in front of a large audience, choose crepe, matte taffeta or wet silk for the dress.
Step 8
Brocade, woven with gold or silver thread, is the perfect fabric for an evening dress that you wear during the cooler months for a date or a romantic dinner. It is quite dense and will keep its shape perfectly during the entire event. Due to the high content of metallized fibers, expensive brocade practically does not wrinkle.
Step 9
Note that the larger the pattern on the fabric, the more it distorts the proportions of the figure. Fabric with a large pattern is absolutely not suitable for petite women. In addition, a large pattern looks bad on models with a complex bodice cut.
Step 10
The only fabric that can easily be washed at home is faux crepe. Therefore, if you plan to wear a dress often, choose this one. Otherwise, you will have to spend a small fortune on dry cleaning.
