The sculptural images of Ancient Egypt are distinguished by their splendor and monumentality. But for a huge relief of several square meters, there is hardly a place in a modern apartment, but it is quite possible to make a small volumetric picture in the ancient Egyptian style.

What is needed for this

The Egyptian-style bas-relief can be cast or molded from plaster. In the first case, you will need:

- drywall sheet;

- silicone sealant;

- petroleum jelly;

- gypsum;

- a picture depicting an ancient Egyptian bas-relief.

For sculpting you need:

- a sheet of plywood, PVC tiles or very thick cardboard;

- sculptural plasticine;

- water-based paint for soil;

- gouache or acrylic paints;

- furniture varnish.

For stylistic reasons, look at the picture. The most characteristic feature of Egyptian bas-reliefs is that their faces are always depicted in profile, even if the person is standing directly in front of the viewer. The ancient Egyptians also had extremely distinctive hairstyles reminiscent of the modern bob cut. The eyes are almond-shaped. As a rule, slender people with long graceful limbs were depicted on ancient Egyptian bas-reliefs.

Mold for casting

Casting a bas-relief is not a very long or laborious process, but it requires a good eye and precision in movements. First, make a mold for the casting. You can mold the base from plasticine, and then fill the recesses with silicone sealant. But in recent years, gypsum plasterboard bases have become increasingly popular. Transfer the drawing to a sheet of drywall. Cut along the contour, and then carefully, layer by layer, make a depression, strictly observing the shape. When the notch is ready, lubricate it with Vaseline, then fill with silicone sealant and let dry. In this form, you can cast a bas-relief from plaster.

No form

The easiest way to make an Egyptian-style bas-relief is to sculpt it out of plasticine. You will need a lot of plasticine, you can take any, but sculptural is most suitable. Cut a piece of plywood to the correct size. Warm up the plasticine. Break off small pieces from a piece, sculpt them onto plywood and smooth them so that there are no free gaps, and the layer itself is smooth and even. Apply several layers of plasticine in this way to get a base approximately 2 cm thick. Draw the contours of the pattern on it. Then apply plasticine only where the convex parts will be.

The advantage of this method is that you can adjust the shape at any time. In addition, you can make a bas-relief in which the drawing is not convex, but concave. In this case, after making the board of the desired thickness and drawing the outlines, begin to carefully remove the excess parts. When the drawing is ready, cover your creation with water-based paint, and then paint with gouache. Please note that rich natural tones prevail in Egyptian fine art - the colors of sand, gold, and a bright blue sky.
