Was born near the capital of Sweden (Stockholm), in Upplands Vesby. Most of the members of his future group were also from there. In his youth, Joey was a member of the Made in Hong Kong collective and the Roxanne collective. Then comes the desire to create his own group called Force. Implements his idea in 1979, and after 3 years the band members change its name to Europe. The line-up included guitarist John Norum, drummer Tony Reno and bassist Peter Olsson. In 1984, they were joined by keyboardist Mick Mikaeli (before that Tempest had performed this task). The group's first line-up wins the Swedish Rock-SM talent competition. For the victory they are provided with a Hot Records contract.

The Europe group created 5 music albums from 1983 to 1991. Joey, in addition to vocals and keyboard playing, was the songwriter of the band. Then there is a big break in performances after the last tour in 1992 until 1999, and Joey Tempest himself decides to pursue a solo career.
