Step 1
Match the lyrics to the song. If you decide to compose music for a song, then you should already have a ready-made text that you need to put on this music. By the way, do not forget that the text and music must somehow harmonize with each other. Although contemporary art allows for the combination of the incompatible, it is necessary to have an unsurpassed musical taste for such a combination to seem organic. So, you can use your own work or another author's work as the lyrics, but then be careful with copyrights.
Step 2
Read the text aloud several times, feel it and think about what associations it evokes in you. What should be the melody for this text - fast or slow? Happy or sad? What should be the musical tempo of the song? Perhaps, as you read the text, the familiar melodies of songs and classical pieces of music will come to your mind. Listen to them for inspiration. And don't be afraid that you might accidentally "steal" a piece of someone's melody for your song - after all, there are only seven notes.
Step 3
Try to translate your associations into melody. To do this, it would be good to own some instrument, for example, a guitar or a piano. Take a few chords, try to hum the lyrics to these chords - this is how a sketch of a melody will be born. But if you do not own any musical instrument at all, then just try to hum a melody on a dictaphone, and then invite a familiar musician. Or contact professionals who will arrange your melody for you for a fee.
Step 4
Try to sing your song from start to finish. It doesn't have to have verses and chorus, but it should sound whole, harmonious. Record the entire song on a voice recorder and listen. Maybe some places in the song cut the ear, there is a sharp transition between melodies, etc. Try to fix these errors.
