Natural silk gives the dress a royal look! However, if you are just starting to sew yourself, you may have some problems in the process of sewing a product from natural silk. Fortunately, they are all solvable!
It is necessary
- -silk;
- - thin white paper;
- -gelatin or starch.
Instructions
Step 1
When choosing a model for a silk dress, do not overload it with complex details or unusual cut. The dress will look great if it falls loose. Silk has an unpleasant feature - it crawls at the seams. Sewing narrow, tight things from it is not worth it.
Step 2
A lining or cover will help strengthen the seams. They will give the dress a beautiful fit. Sew the lining separately using the same pattern as the dress. Join the lining from wrong side to wrong side. This will hide the seams and make your dress look like a professionally sewn garment. Sew the cover with the seams inward, that is, facing the wrong side. The covers are recommended for sheer and translucent silk.
Step 3
Slippery fabrics like silk take longer to cut. It is very difficult to connect silk without basting. A little trick - you can thicken the fabric with gelatin or starch by gently applying it with a brush and ironing it through white paper. Choose the thread you will be sewing carefully. Be sure to try stitching on a piece of fabric. Set the stitch length to short. The choice of seam depends on the style of the dress, on whether the seam needs to be stiffened or flowed. It often happens that the conveyor belt of the sewing machine tightens delicate fabrics. To avoid this, place paper under the fabric.
Step 4
Pay attention to the direction of the seams. Most sewing machines fit the bottom fabric. So if you sew one seam on the front and the second seam on the back, the difference will be clearly visible.
Step 5
If there are darts on the selected dress model, use a simple trick to hide the extra threads. Remove the upper thread from the needle. Thread the bobbin thread in the opposite direction instead of the upper thread, starting from the needle. The end of the thread above the tensioning mechanism should not be much longer than the dart. Start sewing from the top of the dart, do not reinforce. The seam will not come apart, it will be made with one thread.
Step 6
Silk fabrics are difficult to fit along the seam. Rough, uneven gathers sometimes form instead of a soft fit. And after removing the thread, noticeable holes may remain on the thin fabric. The problem is easily solved! If you are sewing a dress with sleeves, sew a knit tape along the edge of the sleeve detail. One edge will support the sleeve, and the other edge will wrap the cut and stitch over the trimmed seam allowances.
Step 7
To avoid problems when processing the neckline, choose a method that is suitable for silk. It is best to finish the collar with piping. You can use an inlay, but it will show through the fabric. If the dress has a lining, fold the lined main fabric face to face and sew the neckline with a regular thin seam. Turn the dress inside out and iron the fabric.
