Svetlana Khorkina is a Russian gymnast who has become an Olympic champion twice. She is an Honored Master of Sports of Russia, as well as a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
Gymnast career
Svetlana Khorkina was born on January 19, 1979 in Belgorod. When the girl was 4 years old, she was sent to the gymnastics section. And already at the age of 11, Svetlana performed well at the All-Union tournament, after which she was included in the USSR youth team.
Svetlana Khorkina won her first adult medal in Brisbane in 1994. There she received 2 silver medals: for vault and for performance on uneven bars. Due to the harsh nature of the victory, the girls were unstable, at the European Championship she takes only sixth place. In 1996, Khorkina received her first gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics.
Khorkina always considered the uneven bars as her favorite projectile for the execution of the program; it was on them that she received all her important awards. For a long time, Svetlana was even called the "queen of the uneven bars", because she demonstrated incredibly difficult exercises, flexibility, strength and balance.
In 2000, at the Sydney Olympic Games, Svetlana Khorkina was able to show herself again and won the second gold medal. In the same year, the champion refused the opportunity to perform repeated exercises at the competition, ran away from the stage in tears, so she took only 10th place.
In 2004, Svetlana Khorkina decides to leave her sports career and becomes vice president of the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation.
