Of course, harvesting edible fruit from a seed-grown banana is unlikely to succeed. But you can get a spectacular looking plant to decorate the interior, and quite quickly. In good conditions, a decorative banana can grow up to two meters tall.
It is necessary
- - banana seeds;
- - nailfile;
- - peat;
- - expanded clay;
- - river sand;
- - sphagnum moss;
- - thermometer with a probe;
- - potassium permanganate;
- - deciduous land;
- - peat land.
Instructions
Step 1
Treat the seeds before sowing. Banana seeds are surrounded by a hard shell, so they are mechanically scarified before germination. In other words, you need to lightly grind off the skin of the seeds with sandpaper or a nail file.
After mechanical processing, soak the seeds in warm boiled water for two days. To prevent them from rotting, the water must be changed every six hours.
Step 2
Prepare utensils for seed germination. They can be germinated either singly or in one wide bowl. In the latter case, it will be easier for you to maintain the same conditions for all seeds. Several holes need to be made in the bottom of the germination container.
Pour a layer of expanded clay two centimeters high on the bottom of the dish. Place the substrate on it so that the thickness of its layer is at least four centimeters. There should be a distance of at least three centimeters between the surface of the substrate and the edge of the bowl, otherwise the seedlings will rest against the glass with which you will cover the bowl.
For the substrate, take four parts washed and calcined river sand and one part steamed peat. Some growers grow bananas in sphagnum.
An hour before sowing, the substrate should be watered with a hot solution of potassium permanganate. The watering solution should be the color of strong tea.
Step 3
Half an hour before sowing, soak the seeds in the same potassium permanganate solution with which you watered the substrate. Spread the seeds over the surface of the substrate and press into the substrate to the depth of the seed size. Cover the seed container with a transparent lid. It can be a plastic bag or glass. Place the container in a warm and bright place.
Maintain the temperature in the container between thirty and twenty-seven degrees during the day and twenty-seven to twenty-five degrees at night, and the night temperature should be different from the daytime.
Check the condition of the substrate regularly. When it dries up, place a bowl of seeds in a large bowl with warm boiled water with a little potassium permanganate. As soon as wet spots appear on the surface of the substrate, watering is finished.
When mold appears on the surface of the substrate, remove the affected areas of the soil and seeds with a teaspoon, and spray the bowl with a strong solution of potassium permanganate. Do the same with the lid that covers the container.
Step 4
Banana seeds germinate within one to three months. When the seedlings have three leaves, transplant them into pots with drainage and a substrate of deciduous, peaty soil and sand. With good care, which includes watering, fertilizing and replanting the banana in a suitable pot or tub on time, you will have a mature plant by the end of the year.
