Drawing a realistic and proportional portrait is one of the most difficult skills in painting and graphics, which many artists master for a long time, constantly practicing and improving their skills. In order to correctly draw a human face, it is necessary to remember how the human head is arranged anatomically, to learn how to draw different parts of the face separately, and finally, to learn how to combine them into a single picture.

Step 1
Be sure to study plastic anatomy - it will help you better understand how the human face works, and what elements of it should be guided by, forming the main proportions. Always follow the direction of the person you are drawing, and pay special attention to the eyes - it is from them, as well as from their combination with the shape and curvature of the eyebrows, that the expressiveness of the portrait depends.
Step 2
Start drawing the eyes with a basic large shape, and then detail them, going from large to small details. Draw eyelashes, tears and highlights at the very end.
Step 3
It is also important to correctly show the shape of a person's nose by depicting flat or convex wings of the nose, narrow or rounded nostrils, and a sharp or rounded tip of the nose.
Step 4
The surface of the skin under the nose should smoothly transition into the lips, and in order for the lips to look realistic and voluminous, study the structure of the lower and upper jaws, as well as the muscles surrounding the human mouth. The jaws do not form a plane, but a curved oval - remember this when drawing lips.
Step 5
Always mark at the beginning of drawing a profile auxiliary line that passes through the center point of the face, and focus on the resulting axis - in particular, the middle of the lips should exactly fall on the center line. The shape of the lips differs from person to person - some have puffy lips, while others have thin lips.
Step 6
Try to convey the individual characteristics of a person's appearance in the drawing, as well as how different parts of a person's face relate to each other, how much they balance each other.
Step 7
Determine the correct location of the ears in relation to other parts of the face - the axis on which the ear is located is connected with the zygomatic process and directed towards the nose. Some people have ears slightly lower, others a little higher.
Step 8
Do not forget to correctly convey in the drawing the shape and sculpturality of the forehead, which plays an important role in conveying the character and emotions of the person you are drawing. Draw the zygomatic protrusions, shade them - the cheekbones create a unique oval of the face, without which it will not be recognizable.
