Anyone who has ever had a chance to stage a home or school play has faced the problem of scenery. It is solved in different ways. Sometimes you can do without decorations altogether, limiting yourself only to household items that are manipulated by the actors. Other amateur directors make sets from the first material they come across, if only they get something that remotely resembles a landscape or an interior. But you can make real theatrical scenery with very little effort.

Instructions
Step 1
All decorations can be roughly divided into 3 parts. These are the backdrop, side decorations and center decorations. The backdrop is a canvas depicting the background of the scene, or a screen for key-projection (slide or film projection), or a neutral background. The side panels are the general interior of the scene (house walls, forest trees, room walls, etc.). The central decoration should correspond to the main plan of the stage action. This can be furniture, a fire, the center of the square, a section of the road, etc.
Step 2
In any case, the scenery must correspond to the director's intention. They are dictated by the plot of a dramatic work. Therefore, first design the scenery for each scene and draw them separately as a pencil sketch on a piece of Whatman paper.
Step 3
Start making decorations with an obligatory component - a backdrop. Depending on the possibilities of the stage, the existing elements for fastening the backdrop are used or a wooden frame is made from a bar, fastened with nails. Attach the fabric to the frame using a mounting stapler.
Step 4
Replaceable backdrop can be made in the form of a banner with top and bottom beams. There can be several such backdrops, one for each action of the performance. Prime the canvas with water-based paint. Paint the backdrop with gouache.
Step 5
Make the side panels from wooden beams in the form of frames. They can be docked with each other using door hinges, which allows them to be folded for transport. Wooden frames can have a complex structure - the shape of houses, taking into account windows, additional doors, etc. Doors are made in such a way as to ensure that the actor goes backstage or on stage.
Step 6
Cover the frames with fabric using a mounting stapler. Prime the fabric with water-based paint. In the same way as the backdrop, paint with gouache.
Step 7
Side panels should be well secured to the stage structure to prevent them from falling or shifting during operation. For fastening, ropes, twine or wire are used. If you plan to change the scenery during the performance, you must use quick-release couplings. In this case, use wire and carabiners instead of ropes.
Step 8
Real objects are used as the central decoration, with which the actors directly act. It can be furniture, mechanisms and other things that meet the director's intention. It is necessary that they match the style, combine with other decorations in terms of color and do not interfere with the movement of the actors around the stage.
