Learning to play the guitar begins with the basics of musical notation. Beginners are encouraged to learn basic chords and learn how to read guitar tabs, which are used for the convenience of playing the instrument.

Step 1
Tablature is a graphical way to record music. Horizontal lines are drawn on a sheet of paper: guitar strings (6 for a six-string guitar, 7 for a seven-stringed guitar). Then they are numbered from 1 to 6 (7) from top to bottom, from the thinnest string to the thickest. Thus, the top first string is at the top, and the bass string is at the very bottom below the last number.
Step 2
Numbers are written on these strips, which denote the fret numbers. From top to bottom, the numbers are arranged in the order in which you want to extract sounds:
- E (Mi) - 6th string (thickest);
- A (A) - 5th string;
- D (Re) - 4th string;
- G (G) - 3rd string;
- B (B) - 2nd string;
- E (Mi) - 1st string (thinnest).
Step 3
The numbers above each other indicate a chord, i.e. extracting sounds from several strings at the same time. An open (unclamped) string is indicated by a 0, a non-sounding string is an X. The length of a sound is determined by the number of spaces or hyphens between numbers. Knowing these conditions, a beginner musician will be able to play the simplest melody the first time.
Step 4
However, keep in mind that every musician writes tablature differently. Therefore, before mastering a particular song, carefully read the accompanying explanations. In addition, in some tablatures, instead of numbers, the strings are denoted by Latin letters corresponding to the name of the notes of the sound of open strings. For example, the first, thinnest, string in the open sound gives the sound "mi", respectively, denoted in the tablature by the Latin letter E.
Step 5
Be careful when working with tablatures, as sometimes the strings do not contain any numbers. This means that they should not sound when played. Remember that any writing of a melody is just a diagram, and therefore you must first listen to the music several times, understand how it is written in the tablature, and only then play it.
