Instructions
Step 1
Find an idea that will inspire you to create a collection. It should be a theme that unites all the outfits into one whole. It is thanks to the idea that the collection differs from a simple set of well-made things. You can use historical clothing or folk costumes for inspiration. A collection based on various trends in art can be very successful. Come up with a name for the collection.
Step 2
Make the first sketches of the silhouette shapes. Determine the color scheme. Compare the preliminary sketches with the original idea again, choose the best ones. Leading designers admit that in order to create a collection of 10-12 outfits, it is necessary to process up to half a thousand sketches.
Step 3
When defining colors and shapes, do not forget about the generally accepted rules for creating a collection. All design schools agree on the need for a unity of nuance, similarity and contrast; contrast is the stark opposite. It can be expressed in color, shape, material texture, in volume. For example, a hard, angular top and a soft, rounded bottom, similarity is the repetition of the same element in different variations. Nuance is an element that creates picturesque, interesting connections between various elements of an outfit.
Step 4
Based on the general idea of the collection, determine the color scheme. Try to avoid both monochrome and excessive multicolor. A flawed color balance is striking and lowers your designer rating. Many fashion designers have achieved fame only thanks to their ability to work with color outside the box. The base color should take up just over half of your collection's color gamut. About a third is assigned to the additional color. The remaining percentages are for accent shades.
Step 5
Model models are created based on the selected sketches and colors. At this stage, a decision is made about finishing. One sketch can serve as the basis for several layouts. Then the best one is selected from them. This particular option will be included in the collection.
Step 6
Go to the store and pick up fabrics and accessories. Be sure to start from the idea of the collection, and not from the fabric you like. It happens that in a store it is difficult to make a choice between several fabrics of similar color or pattern. You should buy all the fabrics you like in small pieces of 10-15 cm. They will be useful to you in order to make a "dyeing". This is the term artists refer to as the paint selection process. For this, all available paints are applied on a white background. After drying, paints are determined that are most consistent with the artist's intention. You have to glue the selected patches on cardboard and determine the fabrics that perfectly match each other and are suitable for your future work. After choosing fabrics, select accessories for them.
Step 7
It's time to sew. If you have friends with standard shapes in mind who are ready to work as models for you, decide in advance who will show which model. And sew the finished product just for this person. Pay attention to the thoroughness of the seams, the accuracy of the cut, the processing of the cuts. It's no secret that such trifles can completely ruin the impression of the entire collection.
Step 8
Choose accessories to showcase your work with. Often, designers make their own accessories to fully match the spirit of the collection.
Step 9
Create a portfolio. The best way out would be an agreement with a professional photographer and a photo session in a good photo studio. But if you do not have the financial ability, you can limit yourself to regular home photography. Try to provide a suitable background for your collection. For example, models based on Russian folk costumes will look great among birches or in the interior of a village house.
Try to create a mood in your portfolio that matches the stated theme.
Step 10
Submit your photos to fashion design websites, send newsletters to well-known clothing companies. Do not ignore design schools as well. Do not be shy, in the worst case, you simply will not be answered. So have the courage and patience and go into battle.
