Winter landscapes are mesmerizing. But many novice artists are confused by the need to paint white snow on a white sheet. This psychological barrier can be overcome by taking a close look at several winter landscapes by renowned artists. The snow in their paintings is rarely snow-white. It has shades that depend on the lighting.
It is necessary
- - paper for watercolors;
- - thick colored cardboard or tinted paper;
- - gouache;
- - watercolor paints;
- - Toothbrush;
- - ruler or flat board;
- - colour pencils.
Instructions
Step 1
Start painting winter not on white, but on colored paper. Colored cardboard with a matte surface is most suitable. It is better if it has a loose structure. Tinted paper will do as well. Cover it with dark gouache or fill it with blue, purple, or black watercolor. On such sheets, you can draw white snow, and it will be perfectly visible.
Step 2
Think over the composition. It should be simple and straightforward enough. It can be a house covered with snow, a lonely tree in the background of a distant forest, etc. At first, it is better to do without human figures and animal silhouettes. Put the sheet as you like. For a squat house, a horizontal arrangement is more convenient, for a tall tree - a vertical one. Draw approximately in the middle of the horizon line. It is better to draw on dark sheets not with a simple pencil, but with a white, light blue or cream pencil. Draw the outlines of a house or tree. House paint the tree, don't touch it yet.
Step 3
Draw snow. Take white gouache and simply cover the area to the horizon. In a night landscape made in a similar technique, halftones and shades do not need to be conveyed. Let there be a white field. You can convey the unevenness of the relief or draw a silhouette of a forest in the distance. Circle it with a thin white line. Paint the trunk of the tree with light gray paint and draw a thin white line around it. Make the branches white. Circle the top of the roof of the house with thick white lines.
Step 4
Draw snowfall. Run the paint onto your toothbrush. Spray the paint by swiping the stick across the toothbrush. If you have a spray bottle or plant sprayer, you can use them.
Step 5
Draw the same or similar composition on a white piece of paper. Fill large areas with light blue, pinkish or yellowish paints first. This is best done with watercolor. Draw the relief lines with slightly darker lines. There should not be a simple pencil in the drawing. Fill the snowfield and sky. The upper half of the picture will have more shades of blue, the lower half - white, pinkish and grayish spots. Draw the trunk and branches of the tree in black, and paint the house in the color you like.
