Tapping is a special sounding technique used on stringed instruments, primarily the electric guitar. With its history, this game technique goes back to ancient times. So Nicolo Paganini used a very similar technique on his violin. It is also known that a similar technique was used in Turkish folk music.

Step 1

But as already mentioned, today tapping is associated mainly with playing the electric guitar. This technique managed to bring a peculiar philosophy to the technique of playing the guitar, because it was thanks to this method of playing that musicians were able to discover completely new, previously unknown possibilities of the guitar.

Step 2

The point of playing the guitar in tapping technique is that the note is extracted due to the fact that the musician strikes the neck with his finger. These actions are performed by both hands: both the right and the left. Hence the names of two types of tapping: one-handed and two-handed.

Step 3

Try tapping in close combination with legato to get started. If you are right-handed, use one finger of your right hand to strike the neck of your guitar. To play the next note, pull off the hand that was struck on the fretboard, and you will hear a note prepared in advance and held by your left hand. This technique of sliding your hand over the strings is called "pull off".

Step 4

For example, with the index finger of your left hand, hold down the first string at the 5th fret, then make a sharp blow with your right hand, first at 12, and subsequently at 13 frets.

Step 5

Then try to diversify the use of the technique. First, pull the index finger of your right hand off the neck, and then with the ring or little finger of your left hand, hit fret 8 and after a few seconds, make a second blow with your right hand.

Step 6

All of the above examples demonstrated only sequential sounds, working with individual notes. If you want to try your hand at another variation of this technique, which is called "piano", first imagine a keyboard and playing on it, during which each hand is responsible for its own melody. After all, each hand when playing the piano has its own part. This is how the neck of your guitar acts as a keyboard. Each fret is a kind of separate key. Try to play notes with both hands at the same time. These are the requirements of technology.

Step 7

Using the tapping technique, you can turn your string "friend" into a decent two-part instrument.
