Carnival masks have a rich history, as costumed carnivals were held in almost all countries at different times. One of the most famous carnivals in the world is held in Venice, and Venetian carnival masks are a stylish and recognizable attribute of this event. It is necessary

Prepare sculptural clay or clay, PVA glue, soft paper, petroleum jelly, scissors, sandpaper, as well as brushes, acrylic paints, rhinestones, beads, feathers, lace, and other decorative ornaments

Instructions

Step 1

Sculpt the base of the mask from sculptural plasticine, using a ready-made plastic mask as a base, or taking an impression from your own face, having previously smeared it with petroleum jelly. Make holes in the impression for the nostrils, eyes and mouth, trying to make the edges of the hole as even as possible. Place a cloth roller in the mask and dry it for 24 hours.

Step 2

Cover the dried model with petroleum jelly, and if you sculpted a mask from clay, cover it with sunflower oil or wax. Tear the paper finely and begin to paste over the mask with small pieces of paper, applying it in even layers. It is best to use pieces of newspaper or brown paper by soaking them in water.

Step 3

Coat each paper layer with PVA glue. Lay, in this way, a layer of paper 3-4 mm thick, and then dry the model until completely dry at room temperature. Until the papier-mâché is dry, do not remove the mask from the plasticine base - it may deform.

Step 4

Carefully separate the dried papier-mâché from the base and trim the edges with sharp scissors. Work the edges of the eye sockets, nostrils and mouth, giving them an even shape. Cover the mask with acrylic filler, smoothing out surface imperfections, and then sand the dried surface of the mask with sandpaper.

Step 5

On the mask, sketch out the outlines for coloring with a pencil, then cover its surface with a layer of white and pink paint. Draw ornaments on the mask with paint of other colors, decorate it with silver and gold patterns, glue sparkles, beads and feathers. The mask is ready.
