What is the Italian football club known for?

The origin of the club

The Sicilian football club Palermo was founded, oddly enough, on November 1, 1900, by English sailors. It did not immediately receive its current name - it was finally assigned to the club only in 1985. Palermo began competing in the early 20th century, winning the Lipton Challenge Cup for the first time 10 years after its founding. In 1912 and 1913, the Sicilians managed to repeat their success, but in 1927 the club faced financial difficulties and was disbanded.

Forced vacation "Palermo" did not last long - it was revived a year later with the money of sponsors and Italian patrons.

In 1932, the Sicilians entered the ranks of the Italian football elite, entering Serie A, and three years later, Palermo finished the season in seventh place, setting their personal record in the history of Italian football. Then not the best times for the club - after the Second World War, its players do not show good results. A slight gap appeared in the 1961/1962 season, which Palermo managed to finish in eighth place in Serie A. The 1972/1973 season brought new setbacks for the club. Then the club "flew" to Serie B and continued to remain in it until 2004.

New era

The revival of Palermo's former glory began in 2002 - after the arrival of the new president of the club, Maurizio Zamparini. Thanks to the professional guidance of Palermo head coach Francesco Guidolin, the Sicilian footballers re-enter Serie A, finishing sixth in their first season. In the 2005/2006 season, Palermo finished eighth in the standings and reached the Italian semi-finals, as well as the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Cup.

The club's most famous and talented players are Luca Tony, Claudio Ranieri, Andrea Bardzagli, Fabio Grosso, Christian Zaccardo, Mattia Cassani and Amauri.

The 2006/2007 season brought the club the fifth place and the best achievement of Palermo in its entire history, and the Sicilians ended the 2009/2010 season with similar success. In the 2010/2011 season, Palermo finally reached the Italian Cup final, but in the final match they lost to Inter with a score of 1: 3.

In addition, the club is also known for the achievements of its players - so, in 2006, four Palermo players at once played in the Italian national team at the World Cup. As a result, Fabio Grosso, Simone Barone, Christian Zaccardo and Andrea Bardzagli won the world title for their national team.
