Step 1

Gamma. It is best to study all the keys up to seven signs with the key, before starting to learn improvisation. In addition to the standard majors and minors, refer to the modes of folk music: pentatonic scale, on the basis of which most of the melodies in jazz and rock are built; Dorian (minor with a sixth high), Phrygian (minor with a second low), Lydian (major with a fourth high), and Mixolydian (major with a seventh low). Study the position of the steps and the relationship with each other. Get into the habit of playing each of these scales with your eyes closed at six different tempos (slowest to fastest) and five rhythms (flat to dotted and triplet).

Step 2

Technics. Playing the guitar allows you to use a huge number of techniques: pizzicato, slap (Bartok's pizzicato), tapping, picking technique, capo, glissando, bends, grace notes, harmonics. In each of them, achieve the optimal level of performance. It will be even better if you study in conjunction with the scales.

Step 3

Draw a harmonic grid - a square of several chords. Repeat it several times in chords to remember. Then play the scale steps in random order according to the key of the square. It is optimal to start in C major and play a grid of the following chords: C major, A minor, F major, G major (you can replace the seventh chord with G). Each chord is played one measure at a time.

Step 4

Complicate the task. Add various techniques to the steps. Be sure to match the pitch you are playing with the overall pitch of the current chord. Please note that it is not necessary to play only the steps from it: it is important that the melody converges only on strong beats or at key moments of a musical phrase (pauses, syncopations, the end of a motive).

Step 5

Think in advance what and how you will play the next moment, be it just a series of sixteenths, a glissando or a syncopation group. Try to hear in advance how it will sound. In this case, you will always know in advance whether the passage will succeed, at what moment it needs to be interrupted, where to direct the movement of the melody. Experiment with timbres and effects.

Step 6

Improvise as a team. Learn to listen to others and give up solo parts to your partners so that there is no confusion in the performance of the song. Listen to the harmony and rhythm of each participant. Make it harder from the first measures to the end.
