Communication between a computer and any node on another network is usually carried out through an intermediate device - a router. When using the TCP / IP protocol, this device is usually called the default gateway. How do I determine the default gateway for my computer?

Instructions

Step 1

There are several ways, one of them is to look in the properties of the network connection. To do this, you need to go to the "Settings" section in the main menu (on the "Start" button) and select the "Network Connections" item. In the window that opens, find the shortcut for your current network connection and right-click on it. In the menu that appears, you need to select the "Status" item. As a result, an information window will open, in which you should go to the "Support" tab. In the bottom line on this tab, you will see the IP address of the default gateway of your computer on the network.

Step 2

Another option is to use the standard ipconfig utility. It is operated from the command line, so first you need to launch a command line terminal. To do this, in the main menu (on the "Start" button), select the "Run" item, which will open the "Run Program" dialog box (you can also open it by pressing the WIN + R key combination). In the input field, type "cmd" (without quotes) and click the "OK" button (or press Enter). A terminal window will open, where you need to type "ipconfig" (without quotes) and press Enter. The utility will determine and show the parameters of all current connections on your computer, including the IP address of the default gateway.

Step 3

It should be borne in mind that when your computer is connected to an external network through a router, the main gateway for the computer will be the internal gateway of this router. Therefore, if you need to know the IP address of the main gateway of the Internet provider, then you need to connect the Internet connection directly to the network card of your computer, bypassing the router. Or you can do without it - just call the technical support of your provider and ask this question.
