Film plot

According to one of the legends of the Wild West, in the small town of San Venganza lived an honest and fair ranger Carter Slade (Sam Elliot), who strays from the path of justice and, out of his greed, ends up on the gallows. At this moment, Mephistopheles himself (Peter Fonda) comes to him and concludes an agreement to save the life of the ranger, the price of this agreement was the soul of the ranger. Mephistopheles sends the ghost rider Carter Slade to the small town of San Venganza for a treaty for thousands of evil souls of the inhabitants of this city. After taking this treaty, the Ghost Rider refused to give it to Mephistopheles and went into hiding.

150 years later, a young motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, returning home in the evening after meeting his girlfriend Roxanne Simpson (Eva Mendes), accidentally learns about his father's fatal illness. Spending time in the garage with a motorcycle, Mephistopheles comes to Johnny and offers to get rid of his father's fatal illness, offers to conclude a contract for his soul. When reading the contract, Mephistopheles tricky way forces Johnny to sign it, spilling a drop of blood on him.

The next morning, waking up, Johnny sees that, surprisingly to everyone, his father has recovered and is feeling fine. At the next performance, Mephistopheles, with the help of his dark forces, arranges an accident, and Johnny's father dies. After such a tragedy, young Johnny tries to run away from everything and on the way he is stopped by Mephistopheles, saying that after a while he will need him. After being inspired by the devil, Johnny leaves his girlfriend.

Over the years, Johnny became a famous stuntman performing incredible stunts and surviving terrible falls. On one of the shows, Johnny meets Roxanne, who has become a journalist, and asks for a date at a restaurant.

At this time, the son of Mephistopheles, Blackheart, comes to Earth, eager to overthrow his father and power on Earth. To carry out a coup against his father, he summons three demons Gressil, Abigor and Wallow to help. In search of the San-Hungarian treaty, Blackheart kills people who get in his way.

Upon learning of this, Mephistopheles, on the eve of a date with Roxanne, comes to Johnny and forces him to become a Ghost Rider, with the condition to release him from the contract if he sends Blackheart and the demons back to the underworld.

Johnny and Blackheart's first meeting took place at the old train station, where the cemetery used to be. At the station, Ghost Rider finds himself a weapon - a long chain with which he sends the first demon, named Gressil, to hell. The rest of the demons and Blackheart manage to escape. Having saddled his enchanted iron horse Harley-Davidson, he ends up in the cemetery, where he meets the Ranger, who tells him everything about the ghost riders and about his predecessor, the ranger, Carter Slader.

While in the city, Johnny observes the picture left after the appearance of the Ghost City. The police also follow these tracks.

Offended Roxanne comes home to Johnny and tries to understand what is happening to him. And Johnny says that he works for the devil and has the powers of darkness. Thinking that Johnny is looking for excuses, Roxanne leaves him. Immediately, the Ghost Rider is detained by the police and taken to the police station, where in the cell he deals with the criminals. Leaving one young man alive with the words "You are innocent" leaves the station, thereby provoking the police to chase.

Gathering in her room, Roxanne sees through the window a fiery stream rising from a nearby building and hurries there. Arriving there, she saw the Ghost Rider and believed Johnny's words. By her arrival, she showed the weak point of the Ghost Rider, watching from the side of Blackheart.

Blackheart, taking advantage of the driver's weakness, captures Roxanne and kills Johnny's friend McCoy.

Johnny goes to the cemetery to the caretaker to look for the San Vengantsy treaty, where he learns that the legendary ranger Carter Slader is standing in front of him. Carter gives the contract to Johnny, believing his words, and shows the way to the town of San Vengantsi, finally giving him the Winchester, disappears into the darkness.

In the town, Ghost Rider encounters the last demon Wallow and kills him.

Freeing Roxanne, Blackheart gains a pact. Johnny is addicted to the Ghost Rider and tries to kill Blackheart, but he fails. After reading the pact, Blackheart receives all the souls and calls himself the Legion. Realizing that Blackheart has a soul, Johnny, with the help of Roxanne, drives him into the shadows, where, with the help of the "Punishing Gaze", he sends Blackheart to the underworld, thereby fulfilling his part of the contract.

Appearing in front of Johnny, Mephistopheles offers to break the reservation and return the soul. In response, Johnny promises Mephistopheles to kill him.

Thus, the film acquires a continuation of the story of the Ghost Rider, as shown in the second film "Ghost Rider 2".
