Whether you are crocheting or knitting mittens, the last step in knitting is knitting your thumb. Usually the thumb is knitted on knitting needles in stockings (all face loops) or in single crochet stitches when crocheting.

Instructions

Step 1

If you are knitting mittens on four knitting needles, knit with the main pattern to the point where the base of the finger is supposed to be. After that, divide half of all the loops of your part into three and remove the resulting number of loops on a safety pin or auxiliary thread. The number of loops may vary depending on the size of the mitt and the thickness of the yarn.

Step 2

On a working knitting needle, cast the same number of loops, thus leaving a hole for the thumb, and continue to knit with the main pattern according to the pattern.

Step 3

When you have knitted the mitten, return to your thumb. To do this, transfer the loops from the pin (thread) to the knitting needle, dial the same amount from the upper side of the hole, plus one loop at the sides. That is, if you had 6 loops left on the pin, to knit your thumb, dial 6 + 1 + 6 + 1 = 14 loops and distribute them over three or four knitting needles (whichever is more convenient).

Step 4

Next, knit in a circle until there is a distance of two rows to the end of the finger. In the penultimate and last rows, reduce evenly three loops, and through the remaining loops pull the rest of the thread and tighten. Pull the thread through the knitted fabric to hide the tip.

Step 5

The finger can also be crocheted. To do this, knit with single crochet in a circle around the hole left in advance. Towards the end, decrease evenly three loops in the last two rows and tighten the thread, passing it through the remaining loops of the row.

Step 6

To decrease the loops when crocheting, it is better not to skip the loops of the previous row, but to grab two loops each (that is, knit one single crochet over two single crochets of the previous row).

Step 7

If you are crocheting from thick yarn, you can also crochet your finger. When using a thinner thread, the fabric from the double crochet is not very dense and has holes, which is irrelevant for mittens.
