Modern industry produces quite a lot of waterproof fabrics. They are used to make tents and awnings, clothing for yachtsmen and water tourists. It is from this material that it is best to sew a raincoat. It is much more convenient than an umbrella, and besides, it easily fits even into a very small handbag. A poncho-shaped raincoat is the fastest to sew.
What to sew from?
For a raincoat, you need a water-repellent fabric. Such materials are technical, but you can buy them in the most ordinary store. The label usually indicates the level of moisture protection (for example, dry10 - such a fabric holds 10,000 mm / cm2 for a day). Among the water-repellent fabrics there are “breathable” ones, in a raincoat made of such material you will feel the most comfortable. Air permeability is indicated by an arrow pointing up. Since you are not going to go on multi-day hikes in such a raincoat, you can choose cheaper materials - calendered nylon or lavsan. You can also sew a raincoat according to the old technology, from cotton fabric with handmade impregnation.
Style and calculation of fabric
A poncho cloak can be semicircular or of two squares. Measure the length of the product. In the first case, the calculation is done as follows. If the width of the cut is greater than the length of the product, you will need 2 lengths for a semicircular poncho cloak, plus about 20 cm for the notch for the neck and processing of the bottom. In the second case, the length of the product is the diagonal of the square, so you need to first calculate the side of this geometric shape. It can be calculated in two ways. If you don't want to remember the school geometry course, just draw a square with such a diagonal on graph paper and measure the sides. At the same time, you will receive a template according to which you can cut the fabric. Double the side of the square and add 20 cm. You will also need a split zipper. Its length is equal to the length of the product.
Cut open
The semicircular poncho cloak is cut in the same way as the half-sun skirt. Measure the circumference of your neck and find the radius. Add it to the length of the item. Lay the fabric wrong side up, find the middle of the hem, and use the chalk to mark a dot. Draw a semicircle centered at this point. To draw a notch, you need to draw a perpendicular from the mark to the edge and set the radius of the notch on it. This will be the center of the notch. Draw a circle, cut out a detail. Cut the hood out of the remaining pieces. It can consist of two squares measuring 20x20 or 25x25 cm.
Assembly
Sew the front edge of the hood immediately, bending the fabric twice to the wrong side. Treat the bottom of the raincoat. Align the lower edge of the hood with the neckline and pin. Try on a poncho, tweak the hood and stitch it in. There are a lot of design options for the top - the hood can be, for example, on a stand with a fastener or removable, you can arrange the top cut with a drawstring, etc.
Square cloak
Cut 2 identical squares out of the fabric. Fold them together right-side up. Cut the neckline. To do this, draw a sector of a circle centered in one of the corners. Calculate the radius of this circle by dividing the circumference of the neck by 6, 28. Sweep and grind the sides of the squares adjacent to the neckline. Cut one of the squares diagonally, that is, from the neck to the bottom corner. The rest of the operations are performed in the same way as in the manufacture of a semicircular raincoat.
