Political career
Irina Matsuonovna Khakamada is an economist by education, she graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the Peoples' Friendship University named after Patrice Lumumba. In 1983 she received the title of Associate Professor in Political Economy. Even with such an education, it was very difficult for a girl to get a job. Nobody wanted to accept a newly minted specialist with a non-Russian surname, and besides, with a small child in her arms.
In 1980, Irina managed to get a job as a junior researcher at the Research Institute of the State Planning Committee of the RSFSR. In 1992, Irina Khakamada founded the Party of Economic Freedom, which was the start for her political career. A year later, she was elected to the State Duma of the Russian Federation as an independent deputy. Irrepressible energy and sharp mind made it possible for Khakamada to create the "Liberal Democratic Union" in 1994.
