A large selection of baby yarns does not guarantee that you will buy good yarns for knitting baby products. Not all yarns recommended by the manufacturer as baby yarns meet the standards. That is why, when choosing it, start from its composition and the quality of the thread itself.

The requirements for baby yarn are an order of magnitude higher than for ordinary knitting threads. When deciding which yarn to choose for knitting children's clothes, be sure to pay attention to its composition and quality, and not to the manufacturer's recommendations.

The main characteristics of yarn for knitting

To determine if the threads you like are suitable for knitting children, you can check them by touch. It is best to attach a ball of thread to your cheek. The threads should be soft, pleasant to the body and should not be pricked.

Be sure to smell them and make sure there are no foreign odors in them. Children's yarn, including dyed yarn, must be hypoallergenic - a conscientious manufacturer must indicate these qualities on the label of a ball of thread.

The composition of the yarn for knitting children's clothes

To knit things, babies need to take only natural yarn. It can be cotton, silk or merino wool.

Natural cotton yarn is good both in summer and winter. While allowing air to pass through and allowing the body to breathe, it nevertheless has a low warming effect, which is good in hot weather. In winter, it is also better to choose cotton for children's products, if you do not have the opportunity to take natural wool. Unlike synthetic fibers, cotton will trap heat underneath outerwear and allow the body to breathe.

Products made from natural cotton threads are quite dense and can quickly lose their shape, so synthetic fibers, for example, acrylic, are often added to the threads. This allows the product to wear longer and keep its shape better. Children's knitting yarn should not contain more than 40% synthetic impurities.

When choosing woolen yarn for children, pay attention to those threads that have no nap and lie gently on the body. Most often, merino wool is used for children's products. She has the necessary qualities, while the threads are moderately thin and stretch a little.

Silk is also often used for children's products. Natural yarn made from 100% silk is extremely rare, but very often it is added to the composition of other fibers, for example, silk-wool and silk-cotton. Silk is good because it has hygroscopic properties, breathability and the ability to keep warm. Unlike natural wool, silk practically does not form pills, which allows the product not to lose its appearance for a long time. Silk is strong, and the product, with its elasticity, keeps its shape well.
