Observation is the topic of today's lesson. It is not so easy to choose a suitable barrier in some old building, and then depict it in the most successful angle. Having made a choice, you will only have to apply your technical skills, because the creation of volume, the transfer of light and shade, the construction of a composition is already a matter of technology.

It is necessary

Watercolor paper, graphite pencils, eraser, craft knife, palette, watercolor paints, brushes, granular filler

Instructions

Step 1

Take a pencil and sketch out the lines of the column behind the bas-relief. Sketch out the outlines of the head itself. Add guidelines for the facial features. Draw the curl to the right of the line, refine the contours of the column.

Step 2

Work on the shadows. Refine the shadows around the mouth line, on the tip of the nose, in the strands on the head and beard. Use strokes to show a shadow on the column to the left of the head, mark different details on the bottom of the column and shade them slightly.

Step 3

Draw a column. Add hair that appears above the forehead. After that, go back to the column and shade all its corners with light strokes. To show the thickest shadows, increase the pressure on the pencil.

Step 4

Add guidelines for the facial features. Draw the eyes and nose, define the mouth line with thick strokes. Show the hollows on the cheeks, deepen the tone of the beard. Shade the shadow around the bottom edge of the stone curl, noting that the deepest shadow lies between the tapering spiral rings. Apply a light shadow to the top of the column.

Step 5

Add details. Continuing to draw the face, alternate the pencil lines with shading. Draw especially careful attention to the eyes and mustache. Draw the drapery with light strokes, mark the shaded areas. Take care of the bottom of the barillef, show the shadows on the pattern. Shade the bottom left of the column.

Step 6

Finish the column. The contours of the stone pillar become less defined at the edges, which helps to focus the viewer's attention on the relief. Use light lines to clarify the outlines of the details above and to the left of it.

Step 7

Add texture. Mix raw sienna with a little cobalt blue and add granular filler to the mixture. Use a squirrel brush to paint over the column and stone curl. Apply the same color to the stone head's hair and beard.
