Most of the canvases made with straight knitting needles end and begin with edge loops. With their help, a neat edge of a solidly knitted product or part is obtained. Several different methods are known for making an edge.

Instructions
Step 1
Remove the end loop of the row without knitting. To do this, moving from right to left, insert your working (that is, right) knitting needle into the extreme thread bow. Then throw the loop onto the working thread and leave it lying on your left index finger.
Step 2
Remember that usually in knitting manuals, the first loop is not called the edge (edge) loop, but the one adjacent to it. That is, if the pattern should have 17 loops of a row, you need to dial 19. The last and first in the rapport (as many knitters call an element of a multi-colored or embossed jacquard pattern that is repeated sequentially) will not be included.
Step 3
Tie the edge loops using a method that creates an edge (called a "chain") in the form of a series of slightly elongated loops. Remember that only the last hem loop in the front row is always knitted. Just remove the first edge loop of the future "chain" and place the thread before knitting.
Step 4
Knit the edge loop that closes the row as an ordinary front loop. Then turn the work over and purl. Thus, the last loop knitted in the row turns into the first, that is, the hem, and is removed on the knitting needle according to the pattern.
Step 5
Use a chain-shaped hem to complete individual cuts that need to be sewn together at the end of the work.
Step 6
Tie a knotted hem. For this, remove the edge loop, and be sure to place the working thread behind the knitting. The last loop in the row, as in the case of the "chain", is also knit.
Step 7
Use "knots" to tie the edge in several rows in height. Along the edge of the work, at equal intervals, the knots of the working thread should be located, seizing the elongated edge loops. As a result, the edge is well fixed and becomes less elastic. This method of knitting edge loops is recommended for sewing planks and other details that require a strong open edge.
