Many peoples have legends about dragons. And science fiction writers create entire planets inhabited by these amazing creatures. Each reader imagines a dragon in his own way, but these fantastic animals also have common features: wings, mouth, exhaling flame, crest, body of a giant lizard.
Which dragon to draw?
Choose "your" dragon. Regardless of whether you are going to portray a Chinese dragon or a character of some legend, try to find a suitable picture. A video is also suitable, because there is nothing difficult in copying the desired frame. Consider the future hero of your painting. Think about the angle you would like to portray, as well as the approximate ratio of length and height. If you are going to paint with watercolors, it is best to choose watercolor paper as well. The leaf can lie both vertically and horizontally, depending on the proportions of your dragon. Think about the environment in which you would like to portray him. It can be an old castle, a Chinese pagoda, a lake shore, an unexplored planet with strange plants, and much more. There may be another character next to the dragon - a brave rider, a beautiful girl in a warrior costume and other heroes for whom you need to leave room.
Whatman paper and even paper wallpapers are suitable for drawing with watercolors. Pictures on the back of the wallpaper look even more interesting than others, since the wallpaper has a pronounced texture.
We start with proportions
To start drawing a dragon in stages, draw a vertical line with a hard pencil approximately in the middle of the sheet. It will run along the back of the neck. Divide this line into 3 parts mentally. Where the bottom third ends, put a full stop. Draw several rays from it - the approximate direction of the wing, the approximate position of the front paws, the direction of the tail. You can immediately outline the top line and wing segments. The body of the dragon resembles a horizontally elongated oval, it can also be outlined. The neck is a tube that tapers slightly towards the top. You already have one line, draw the second a little closer to the left edge of the sheet. For the muzzle, you can draw a rectangle, and then draw a mouth - 2 stripes up to about the middle of the rectangle.
For a sketch, which will then be painted with paints, small details can be skipped. Apply only the general contours of each part of the body.
Remove excess
The next step is to remove the extra lines. Draw out the outlines with a soft pencil or wax crayon. The last method is also good because the wax prevents the colors from mixing, so you can paint the drawing with a brush or a foam sponge. The dragon is known to be covered in scales. Large scales can be immediately drawn with small ones to match the main color or slightly darker. It is better to make small scales with a brush after large details have been filled in with paint.
Paint the dragon
Determine which tone in your drawing will be the lightest. Moisten the surface inside the outline with water, then fill with a light paint - for example, yellow or orange. Let the paint dry, this will happen pretty quickly. Apply a second coat of paint over several areas, darker (for example, accentuate the nape of the neck, upper back, feet, etc.). Apply even thicker paint strokes - eyes, nostrils, wing bones, fingers. The last step is to paint the comb using the wetting method. To get separate segments of the comb, dip the brush completely into the paint, then attach it to the sheet so that the widest part is on the back of your dragon's head.
