Ship modeling is one of the most common hobbies. Modeling enthusiasts build both working prototypes of ships and show models that have never been launched. Anyone who is just starting his way in the construction of models of ships, the first experience can give the creation of a simple yacht.
It is necessary
Plywood 2-4 mm thick, veneer, gypsum, fiberglass, epoxy or polyester resin, waterproof glue
Instructions
Step 1
Start building the model with the selection of drawings, the easiest way to select them in the magazine "Modelist-Constructor". You can see electronic versions of all issues of the journal here:
Step 2
The way the model is built depends on its purpose and the qualities that you want to give it. The most modern materials and technologies should be chosen for the yacht, which will participate in the competition. But if you are taking your first steps in the sport of ship modeling, you should choose the simplest and most affordable construction technologies.
Step 3
The most technologically advanced way to create a yacht hull is to glue it out of fiberglass on a plaster block. First, create a plywood enclosure set from the line drawing. Qualitative processing is necessary only for the outer part of the elements of the set. Then fill the set with plaster, carefully level the outer surface. Perform final finishing on completely dry plaster.
Step 4
Cover the finished blank with a release layer - for example, a thin layer of Vaseline. Then cover with finely woven fiberglass, use epoxy or polyester resins as a binder. Before use, the glass cloth must be annealed with a blowtorch to remove paraffin. Do not burn through the fabric, just get a light beige color.
Step 5
To simplify subsequent processing, press a thin plastic wrap to the outside of the glass-covered hull, taking care not to allow creases or leave them in the keel area. For tight crimping, you can use vacuum molding: place the glued body in a plastic bag, then pump out the air from the bag with a vacuum cleaner.
Step 6
A variant of gluing the body on the matrix is possible: after making a plastic shell on the blank, fix it with an outer set, process the inner surface to an ideal state. After that, glue the body of the model inside the resulting matrix. This method is appropriate if you plan to create several of the same type of enclosures. In addition, housings that come out of the matrix usually do not need additional processing.
Step 7
If you do not want to work with epoxies and fiberglass, use the traditional, time-tested method to create the yacht hull. Cut out the parts of the body set from plywood with a jigsaw, assemble it with the keel up on the glue. Then paste over in two layers with strips of veneer. Stick the strips diagonally, end-to-end: first one layer, then, crosswise to the first, the second. The resulting body will be strong and lightweight. Sand it, remove all defects.
Step 8
Drill a hole for the steering axle and glue the brass tube into it. Fix the keel with screws on waterproof glue. Alternatively, two screws or long bolts are glued into the keel - during its manufacture. Then holes are drilled in the body, after which the keel is fixed on a mixture of glue with sawdust (option with screws) or attracted by nuts.
Step 9
Install the deck and mast according to the drawings, and when making the deck, provide for the rigging fasteners. If the model is radio-controlled, make access hatches in the deck to access the receiver, battery, and controls. Use thin lavsan or suitable airtight fabric to make the sail.
