You came to a dance group. Whether it is ballroom or folk dances, or something from modern trends, you are faced with the same task - to remember the dance movements correctly and with high quality. If you are having trouble with this, there are some helpful tips to try.
Instructions
Step 1
Dance is a complex system of movements. To master it well, you need, as professional dancers say, to memorize in two ways at once - with your head and legs.
Step 2
While the instructor or teacher is explaining a particular movement, memorize with your head. Watch carefully how he does it. Describe the movement in your mind. You can give it a nice catchy name. Many dance techniques and movements already bear classical names, and they are also worth remembering, but your personal name may turn out to be much clearer and more colorful, which means it will help you learn the lesson more firmly.
Step 3
When the explanation is over, it is time for the feet. Try to perform the movement slowly and clearly, being aware of every moment. Legs do not understand words, they only remember efforts and directions. However, during the first repetitions, you can repeat the name that you gave it to yourself to associate the name and movement.
Step 4
It is sometimes useful to break up a movement into phases and repeat it piece by piece. However, even in this case, intersperse this practice with the entire movement. It is very important to understand exactly how the phases are combined with each other, and into what they are transformed when they are performed together. This is especially noticeable in dances where the fusion of movements is very important, such as the Viennese waltz or classical tango.
Step 5
Don't look under your feet, no matter how difficult steps you have to take. If your practice room has a mirror, control yourself by looking into the reflection. The habit of moving your legs under the control of your gaze will only lead to the fact that you will not be able to do this while looking at your partner or at the audience. Although the head and legs must memorize the dance in concert, they should not try to help each other.
Step 6
Mastery in any movement only comes with repetition. Therefore, train not only in class, but also at home. If you have a video of the lesson, be sure to watch it before practicing on your own. Remember how the teacher performed the movement, and try to do the same as he did.
Step 7
One way to look at yourself from the outside is to help someone who's doing worse. If you notice that some of your comrades are not given a particular movement, do not hesitate to offer help and do not refuse if asked for it. By telling and showing, you can understand something that previously eluded you, and by looking at the mistakes of beginners, you can learn to avoid such mistakes.
