A suite is a multi-part musical composition that consists of several pieces of different characters of different genres and often has a programmatic basis. There are dance suites, instrumental suites, opera and ballet suites, etc.

The suite originated during the High Renaissance. Initially, this was the name of a two-part sequence of fast and slow dances (pavans and galliards). Later, at the end of the 17th century, a four-part structure of the suite was formed, consisting of stylized, contrasting dances in character: allemande, chime, saraband and gigi.

In the 18th century, the suite includes melodious pieces, called - clearly under the influence of the opera - "aria". At the same time, the suite penetrates into the ballet - this is now the name for the big dance divertissement at the end of the second act.

The suite changed dramatically in the 19th and 20th centuries. It becomes programmatic, an explicit or hidden plot appears in it, often borrowed from a literary work. Such is, for example, "Scheherazade" by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. "Album" suites appeared - for example, "Album for Youth" by R. Schumann or "Album of Pieces for Children" by GV Sviridov. Suites that illustrate works of art appear. Such are, for example, "Pictures at an Exhibition" by MP Mussorgsky or numerous "Suites" by MK Churlionis, written based on his own paintings. A selection of the most expressive fragments of operas, ballets, operettas becomes a suite. This, for example, is a suite from the ballet "Nutcracker" by PI Tchaikovsky or - already in a rethought form - "Carmen Suite" by J. Bizet - RK Shchedrin. Later, suites from music for drama performances or films appeared - such are the suite "Peer Gynt" by E. Grieg, "The Revizskaya Tale" by A. G. Schnittke, or the suite from the music for the film "The Brothers Karamazov" by II Schwartz. suites in the genres of symphonic or vocal-symphonic music. Such are, for example, "Symphonic Dances" by S. V. Rachmaninov or "Suite on words by Michelangelo Buonarotti" by D. D. Shostakovich.
