Instructions
Step 1
Find a vest pattern. Look for it online or in fashion magazines. If you cannot find a child's model, use the drawing of an adult, reducing it by several sizes. You can also copy the construction principle from the old child's shirt. Unfasten it, leave the shelves and backrest and circle them on paper.
Step 2
Reshape the bottom of the shelves. Make them semicircular, triangular, or asymmetrical. You can also change the shape of the shelves on the button line, for example, make a scent or turn the vest into a double-breasted one by increasing the width of one shelf.
Step 3
Choose a fabric for your vest. For the outer part, a suit that holds its shape well is suitable, and use a thin sliding material for the lining. Cut out the paper pattern, remembering to leave seam allowances (3 cm). Attach the template to the wrong side of the fabric and secure with safety pins around the perimeter. Trace the pattern with a crayon or pencil if the fabric is light. Remove the pattern, cut out the details of the vest.
Step 4
Fold the parts right-side in. Baste side and shoulder seams. Try on a vest for your child. If it fits well, treat the backing in the same way. Insert the lining into the waistcoat and join them together, trimming the hem and armholes with bias tape. Sew buttons, hooks or buttons with patch loops on the shelves.
