Pyrography, better known as wood burning, appeared at a time when people noticed that wood, when it came into contact with fire, changed color. At first, the craftsmen used a red-hot metal rod for burning. There is also a known method of burning with a sunbeam passing through a magnifying glass. At home, it is most convenient to burn with the help of a special apparatus, which can be bought at an artist's goods store.

It is necessary

  • - apparatus for burning;
  • - board;
  • - picture:
  • - copy paper;
  • - a piece of chalk;
  • - water;
  • - refractory support;
  • - sandpaper.

Instructions

Step 1

You will need a board for pyrography. Planks made of deciduous trees are suitable - maple, linden, oak, birch, alder. The industry also produces special cardboard for burning, you can find it where they sell paints, canvas and other art supplies. A cutting board works too. Conifers are less suitable because they are very difficult to clear of resin. But sometimes pine and spruce boards are so beautiful that it remains only to supplement the natural pattern with a small ornament - and the decorative panel is ready. There should be no noticeable defects on the board - cracks, knots, etc.

Step 2

If you prepare the board yourself, you need to process it. Sand the surface with fine sandpaper. Dilute chalk in water in a 1: 1 ratio, rub the area where the drawing will be with this mixture. Let the surface dry. Cutting boards usually do not need such processing, they are sold almost ready for pilography.

Step 3

Select a drawing. It is better if it is black and white, with pronounced contours. It can be a floral ornament, a still life, a landscape, or a plot scene. Pyrography is similar to other types of graphics, so it is better to choose an engraving rather than a painting for burning.

Step 4

Transfer the drawing to the board. This can be done with carbon paper. Draw all the lines carefully, including the small strokes. If there is no carbon copy, and the wood is soft enough, the pattern can be scratched. This will not be noticeable on the finished product.

Step 5

The device for burning out consists of a body with a thermostat, a wire with a plug and a handle with a needle inserted into it. The needle looks like a metal loop. Some models come with a fireproof stand. The grip is held in the same way as a fountain pen. Try to burn a few lines on a piece of wood. Note that the higher the temperature, the darker the line will be. The color and depth of the stroke also depend on the burn time.

Step 6

Begin to burn out the outline. Lines can be drawn in several ways. For example, you can place the needle at a slight angle to the drawn line so that the most convex part of the needle falls on the pencil stroke. This method is especially good if you are going to burn images of animals, flowers with jagged edges, etc. You can burn strokes sequentially so that the beginning of one is a continuation of the other. Make sure that each stroke takes the same time as all the others, only then the line will be the same color and the same thickness. Burn through the finer details. Convey the folds of clothing and chiaroscuro - it is better to do this with lighter strokes, that is, lowering the temperature or reducing the burn time.
