Step 1
There are two ways to sharpen skates - either with or without a groove. If the skates are sharpened with a groove, then they will glide much better. This effect is achieved due to the fact that skates sharpened in this way have a smaller area of contact with the ice.
Step 2
The best option is to turn to professionals: take your skates to a special workshop for sharpening. There they will be sharpened on a professional machine designed specifically for this purpose. A professional machine completely repeats the profile of the ridge, respectively, and sharpens it perfectly. However, you can try to sharpen them with your own hands. First take sandpaper and sand the ridge groove very carefully. Next, using a file, bring the chute to the correct shape. Also sharpen the edges of the knife with a file.
Step 3
Pay particular attention to sharpening the outer and inner edge of the blade as evenly as possible. Indeed, with uneven sharpening on skates, it will be very difficult to maintain balance. If burrs form on the blade during sharpening, you can try to remove them using a file with a very fine notch. Or buy a special stone that removes teeth and burrs very efficiently, improving the level of sharpening. Such processing will allow you to significantly increase the period between sharpening skates.
Step 4
Sharpening your skates, try to do everything as efficiently as possible, because the speed and ease of sliding, maintaining balance while skating depend on the level of work. Please also note that you should not remove a lot of metal during the sharpening process. True, the less metal is removed, the more often this procedure will have to be repeated. And to check if the blades of your skates are well finished, place them straight: correctly sharpened shoes will stand perfectly straight.
