A self-made mirror in a curly frame is an excellent interior decoration and an ideal gift for a close friend. The beauty of making a mirror is that you can determine the shape of both the reflective surface itself and the frame, and at the same time its color.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare a place to work. It is better to work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, since you will have to work with reactive nitrogen that is harmful to the respiratory tract.
Step 2
Dissolve the silver object in 10% nitric acid solution. An old coin is suitable as an item.
Step 3
Evaporate the solution and calcine the precipitate to reveal copper. Dissolve the precipitate again in distilled water, the copper will settle to the bottom. Pour the solution into another container.
Step 4
The next step in making a mirror is glass selection. It must be of suitable thickness and shape and free from defects. Wipe it with a solution of distilled water and chalk powder. Wipe down the ends too.
Step 5
Place the mirror on a horizontal surface and fill with tin dichloride solution. Wipe with a sponge, remove traces of the solution. Prepare two compositions: 10 gr. ammonia solution (concentration 25%), 5 gr. silver nitrate, 50 ml. caustic potassium (solution with a concentration of 10%), distilled water to a liter. Second composition: 25 gr. sugar, 10 ml. nitric acid (ten percent solution), water up to 250 ml. Boil for five minutes.
Step 6
Mix the first and second solutions in a 9: 1 ratio, respectively. Pour the mixture over the middle of the glass. Spread evenly over the entire surface with a glass rod. After 10-10 minutes. Drain the liquid into a container. Repeat pouring three to four times. Remove white plaque with chamois.
Step 7
Rinse and dry the glass. Paint the silver-plated part with red lead diluted in turpentine. Wipe the non-silver part with a nitric acid solution. Insert the mirror into the frame.
