World Chess Day is celebrated annually on July 20. This holiday was founded in 1924 by the International Chess Federation (FIDE - Federation Internationale des Echecs). By the decision of FIDE, this day began to be celebrated only in 1966. The Federation Internationale des Echecs is a non-governmental and international organization that includes 170 national chess associations.

The purpose of the existence of this organization is the development and dissemination of chess in the world, the expansion of knowledge about this game. It is FIDE that sets the conditions for holding chess tournaments and championships, confers titles, and also changes and edits the rules.

Chess has been recognized as a sport in 105 countries around the world. It is still not completely clear where exactly this game was invented, but there is an ancient legend according to which the creator is an Indian Brahmin. In exchange for his invention, this man asked the rajah for a strange payment - the amount of wheat grains that would be obtained if one grain was put on one cell, two on the second, four on the third, etc.

It is believed that not only chess was created in this way, but also exponentiation, which is a mathematical action. In India this game was called chaturanga. Over time, the rules and appearance of chess itself have changed slightly. The game was broadcast around the world through Indians, Arabs, Persians and Europeans. Translated from the Turkic language, "chess" means "the ruler is defeated."

During the International Chess Day, quizzes, tournaments and various events are held in all clubs where fans of this ancient game gather. Chess players visit educational institutions and conduct master classes, talk about the game itself and famous grandmasters.

Chess is very popular all over the world due to the fact that it develops logical and creative thinking, improves memory and mental abilities.
