The unique mineral shungite is a black stone, similar to coal. It is the oldest rock formation, which is 2 billion years old. Shungite deposit is located in Karelia and it is the only one on the planet.
The stone got its name from the village of Shunga, near which it was discovered in 1887. Some scientists suggest that shungite is the result of a meteorite fall, but there are many more supporters of the natural origin of the mineral.
Despite its rather ordinary and unassuming appearance, shungite has a unique composition, the basis of which is carbon (99%) and about ten other chemical elements. Vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and other elements can be found in the ash of the stone. Scientific research of the mineral made it possible to discover new, unknown compounds called fullerenes in it.
Today, the only mineral in the world in which such compounds have been found is shungite. It is thanks to fullerenes that the stone has medicinal and protective properties. This discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize.
