Instructions

Step 1

Start your knife making by preparing a project. First, complete a pencil sketch. Decide on the size of the future product and its shape. As a basis, you can take an existing knife design or come up with a design yourself.

Step 2

Start making the knife directly with the blade. Take the workpiece and mark the place for the axial hole. Drill a hole along the markings, and after that make further markings of the blade contours. Otherwise, in the process of drilling a hardened workpiece, the drill can be pulled aside and the dimensions will be violated.

Step 3

Transfer the contours to the workpiece and grind the future blade using a grinder and emery. For the convenience of holding the blade during processing, do not cut off the blade itself from the workpiece and do not form the heel of the blade.

Step 4

Now, with the help of a grinder or emery, bring out the descents of the blade. For more precise turning of descents, you will need a flat grinder. After the contours of the workpiece are formed, grind and shape the heel of the blade. The blade is ready.

Step 5

Start making side surfaces (dies). Transfer the image of the dies to metal blanks. Pay attention to the hole marking. It is enough to perform it on only one die.

Step 6

After marking the holes, start drilling. In order for the holes to completely coincide, both dies should be drilled simultaneously. First use a 2 mm drill bit and then re-drill the hole to the desired size.

Step 7

After drilling the holes, cut and grind one block along the contour. Then precisely align the holes on both dies and mark the second workpiece. Use the correct diameter guide pins to align the holes accurately (drill shank will do).

Step 8

Fasten the dies together using special racks, the height of which should be equal to the thickness of the blade along with the thickness of all washers.

Step 9

Drill a hole in the dies for the blade stopper pin, install the axle in the stopper pin, install the blade and the second die. Move the blade to the open position and mark on the die the position of the blade heel (more precisely, the place where the liner of the lock should abut).

Step 10

Mark out the liner and cut it out. Check the fit. If necessary, adjust the liner so that the liner plate is positioned at the beginning of the heel of the blade. Place a small ball on the edge of the liner plate to keep the blade locked in place.

Step 11

Mark the side skirts on the pieces of wood, cut them out and adjust. Soak the wooden linings with linseed oil.

Step 12

Assemble the knife and make sure the lock is working properly. Make adjustments and adjustments if necessary. For smoother operation of the mechanism, lubricate it with machine oil.
