You can create graphic and pictorial works with pastels. This technique is suitable for those drawings where it is not necessary to write out small details. The pastel drawing has its own unique charm. And in order to learn how to draw in this way, you need to know the features of the material and the rules for applying pastel layers.

It is necessary

pastel crayons, special non-glossy rough paper, a simple pencil and a tablet, a fixative, shading accessories, a knife, an eraser

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare semi-soft pastel cylindrical crayons. It's good if you have a set of fifteen colors. Store crayons only in a special box with a foam insert, as the crayons are very fragile. Before work, artists recommend breaking long crayons into two parts and be sure to hold the crayon by the wrapper so as not to get your hands and paper dirty.

Step 2

Place a clean cloth in front of you. With it, you can wipe your hands or erase unnecessary strokes. Also, by placing a few crayons on a rag, you will be sure that they will not roll, touching and mixing.

Step 3

Try drawing lines on the paper. You can draw with any part of the pencil. See what lines you get. Much depends on the strength of the pressure. However, do not overdo it, otherwise the chalk will crumble into pieces.

Step 4

After applying paint to the paper, try blending the design. This can be done with your fingers or cotton swabs. In this case, the color will change from the force of pressure and the duration of friction. Feathering can be used to merge different colors or create a new hue.

Step 5

You can correct incorrectly applied strokes, unless the paper is completely painted over. Try brushing the pastels off the sheet with a cotton rag and erasing the remaining traces with an eraser. If the pastel is dense, blend the color until it is translucent, and then try to apply the necessary strokes over the top.

Step 6

Use crayons of one or two colors for the first works. When making a drawing of the same color, pay attention to the chiaroscuro. When working with two colors - all attention is paid to the density of the paint application.

Step 7

The finished drawing must be fixed. Use a special fixative for this or sprinkle the drawing with colorless hairspray.
