Today you can buy almost any kind of skis from the most unpretentious amateur to the ultra-modern professional, custom-made using the most modern technologies. However, there are still many fans to pick up a carpentry tool, a piece of suitable wood and make skis out of it to their liking. This is not an easy matter, requiring certain knowledge, professional skills and patience, since skis are made for a long time. For example, here's how you can make your own hunting skis.
Instructions
Step 1
Take a birch with a strong straight-grained structure, such trees usually grow in elevated dry places. Wood is harvested in winter, since it is at this time that the movement of juices is practically absent.
Step 2
Peel the harvested tree from the bark, then dissolve the blank for the skis - the tulle - into the bars. Their length corresponds to the size of future skis. Finish the preliminary stage by tying the prepared bars along the edges with each other, and in the middle between them, install a spacer with a thickness of 5-6 cm.
Step 3
After that, a break is taken for two to three weeks so that the workpieces dry out properly, for which they are placed in a warm, dry place.
Step 4
After the blanks have dried, apply the contour of the skis to them, and then shave off all the excess wood, and carefully treat this place with a scherhebel.
Step 5
Before you start bending the skis, burn their ends for an hour with a blowtorch or place in a container with very hot water for the same time. The water should not cool down, for which every 15-20 minutes put a few hot stones in it.
Step 6
Clamp the steamed ends of the skis into a special block, in which their bend takes the desired shape. For reliability, fix their position with clamps or tied straps.
Step 7
Next, the skis are dried again for 5-6 days, and then finished. To process chamfers located on the upper plane, you can use a hump plane or a semicircular chisel.
Step 8
A very important detail is the square or semicircular groove on the sliding surface. Its depth should not exceed 5 cm, and its width should not exceed 2 cm. Finishing treatment is completed by impregnating skis. Saturate the lower part with heated resin, and the upper part with hot linseed oil.
